Topic warning: This post contains references to death, violence, and trans-related murders.
Annually from November 13 to 19, Transgender Awareness Week is observed to educate about trans people and the issues associated with the identity and transition of trans people. This week leads up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance, honoring the trans individuals murdered in the past year.
To celebrate Transgender Awareness Week, it is tradition to watch a trans-related movie or documentary and educate people about trans people and our issues. GLAAD recommends watching the documentary DISCLOSURE on Netflix, and you can find a list of trans-related movies to watch here. Human Rights Campaign will also be hosting events throughout the week.
While Transgender Awareness Week is a celebratory observance, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is a more solemn event. The Trans Day of Remembrance started in 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a trans woman murdered the previous year. This year, at least 350 trans individuals were killed around the world, a rising figure from last year's count of 331. The American Medical Association has declared the killings of trans individuals an epidemic.
You can observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance by learning the names and stories of the people killed, holding a vigil involving reading the victims' names, and advocating for trans rights to be upheld. Learn about the trans people killed this year in this article by GLAAD.
Here at The Pride Club, we have a group for posting art and discussing Transgender Awareness Week and the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Throughout this week and on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, I will be drawing trans people who were murdered this year.
